Argumentative Essay Proposal
I would like to write about whether junk food should be taxed.
Reading Journal #5
This article follows a woman reliving the memories she once had with her late husband, and she explains how she can recall a special memory in each part of the house that they once lived in together. She explains that memories still live on in such places as houses even after we have left. Lisa says “Do the houses we empty need our memories to affix them to earth? Or do they fix our memories in place for us?” After reading her story I believe she is trying to show that the houses fix our memories in a place for us, and anytime we go back to that place we relive those memories so vividly.
I liked Lisa’s writing style for this article particularly because if you have ever lost a loved one , you can really relate to how she is reliving those happy and sad moments. Her writing really evokes emotion through the details she puts into each moment.

This article started off about medicine in the late 1930′s where it was rare to have an effective treatment for almost any illness, and only a select few had that luxury. It later explains how advanced medicine has became over the past few generations, and how we now have treatment for the countless conditons including drugs and medical and surgical procedures. With the advancement of medcine needs to come the advancement of doctors, but medicine is becoming far too complex. Most doctors would agree that medicine was much simpler years ago, and we are now being faced with problems such as the lack in quality of care and the high price of health care.
Dr. Gawande has a very powerful style of writing purely because he presents facts to back up his writing, and he is very knowledgable about his work. He clearly gets his point across and proves his point on an agruable subject.

Ethnography Proposal
For my ethnography I am going to research the similarities and differences between two different types of nurses. My plan is to interview a home-care nurse and an emergency room nurse since I don’t have the chance to actually go to their work directly and observe them. The only thing I really know about this sub-culture is the differences between the two types of nurses, one is obviously more fast paced and involves short term care and the other is long term care. I look forward to learning about the similarities between the two.

“If Air Travel Worked Like Health Care”
This article had a completely different style of writing compared to the other articles I’ve read, and that’s what made it fun to read. The entire article is a conversation between two people over the phone. On one end of the line there is a person that works for “Air Health Care” and the other is a consumer trying to book a flight. Air Health care is an airline that works like the health care system, and with that being said this call doesn’t go so well. The main idea is that our health care system is completely outdated and illogical; we should be receiving better service! Being that we are in the 21st century, we as Americans want everything instantaneously and you would think our health care system would be more advanced. It just proves the point that if other companies were run like our health care system, we would be in trouble. I really enjoyed reading the conversation between the two people because it gives you a clear perspective of how our health care system works. The article never states what the main idea is, but it’s obvious through the dialogue and makes for a more interesting read.

Reading Journal #2
The second article I chose to read and write about is called “Death Becomes Him”. It’s written about Ludwig Minelli, who runs a company called Dignitas. Dignitas is an assisted suicide organization out of Zurich. Over the past twelve years he and his staff have helped over 1,000 people kill themselves with a “cocktail” filled with sodium pentobarbital. As hard as it may be to believe, assisted suicide is legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and in Oregon, Washington, and Montana right here in the United States. Although it is restricted to people with incurable disease that involves extensive medical testing and physician consultations; it also requires applicants to be permanent residents. On the other hand Switzerland has the most liberal laws concerning assisted suicide. Dignitas is the one organization in Switzerland and in entire world that will facilitate the death of almost anyone who asks. Minelli calls it “the last human right”. The organization claims they exist to prevent failed suicide attempts to those wishing to kill themselves and to do so without fear of pain or failure. The article goes into detail about how attempted suicide was an accepted practice in the ancient world, until the rise of Christianity and its belief of the sanctity of human life. The writer also spoke to various people, including some who worked for Dignitas and asked for their outlook on the jobs they perform. All of the staff seemed to be fine with their participation in the killing of these people. They believe the patients have the right to end their life whenever they want and it’s better to do it in a safe way. The writer went even further with his interviews and actually spoke to a woman awaiting her suicide at the Blue Oasis, the building where they performed the assisted suicides. She had an incurable neurological disorder and was ready to die rather then linger for months and/or years awaiting her death. Towards the end, the article focuses on the concept of “how far is too far?” This makes the reader ask the question, does he do this to make money or to actually help these people that are suffering? To be paid over $10,000 to help someone die seems outrageous! Overall I really enjoyed this article because it examined the views of multiple sources rather then just one point of view. He gave great descriptions of characters and the dialogue between characters gave you an understanding of them. The writer did a really good job making his article flow from paragraph to paragraph. With an article this long it is easy to go off track but he stayed completely on topic and was very informative.

Reading Journal
The first article I chose to write about is called ‘The HIV Disbelievers”. It’s an article about Christine Magiorre, the founder and head of Alive & Well AIDS Alternative and her firm belief that HIV does not cause AIDS. While many people including scientists and protesters highly disagree with her, she has many people that support her theory. She even has the support of famous singers, actors, and bands in the United States. It all started when Christine tested positive for HIV at the age of thirty six. After finding out the “bad news” she was going to start treatment, but she changed her mind because she felt completely healthy and decided she had no reason to live her life as if she was dying. Christine claimed that the testing done for HIV is faulty. In the article she stated “standard HIV antibody tests are so oversensitive that they can show positive if you’ve ever gotten a flu shot”. She goes against what most doctors believe and actually encourages people to stop taking medication and to stop worrying about spreading the virus to others.
I actually found this article quite interesting because it’s from the point of view of a person who has been diagnosed with HIV but doesn’t believe in treatment. That’s not something you hear everyday. While I understood the main idea, I don’t think she proves her point. She needs to present more facts if she wants readers to take her theory seriously.
